Locked out – can my lock be picked? This unfortunate event can happen and does happen to many of us! A locksmith has a few options to open your lock for you. These options will depend on a couple of factors, though.
Locked out - Lock picking service
When can a locksmith pick your lock for a lock out and why it’s not always the best solution. Whether you lock should be picked or not would depend on a couple of factors. For example: Have all the keys been lost for the house or is there a set inside. Furthermore, is the lock in bad shape and has it been acting up. If all keys are lost and/or the lock is faulty, it may be that drilling the lock and replacing it is the best solution. As well, some locks simple can’t be picked, these would include high end or high security locks. Overall, even if a lock is picked it may also be damaged by the picking. Usually, locks will work after picking but that is not always the case.
Lock Bumping
What is lock bumping and how can it help when you are locked out? If a lock can’t be picked or drilled a locksmith can try to bump the lock with his bump key. Essentially, the lock smith will insert his bump key 75% and turn right and left and then soft mallet the key into the lock. This option is available and possible if the locksmith has the right type of bump key that matches the pins in your lock. Although, it may not always work.
Locked out - key making service
Keys can be fabricated for some locks and a locksmith may be able to provide this service. Overall, it is dependant on the type of lock and whether a particular locksmith can do this service. Although, keep in mind that only a small percentage of locks that can benefit from this service. Mostly, being high security coded locks and such.
Locked out - drilling service
A locksmith will offer to drill the lock for various reasons. Either, all the keys are lost or the lock is faulty. As well, it can be the a lock cannot be picked whether it’s a simple lock or a high security lock.
Locked out - lock replacement
If it is required that the lock be replaced, it is a good opportunity to upgrade your locks. Ideally, this may prevent future lock outs due to faulty locks or locks that lock automatically. It is a good time to change your locks, as there are many new and cost effective locks on the market that make it easier to keep things locked up and offer a great convenience for us all.
Things to check before the locksmith leaves
After all is said and been done, you should always check that your old lock or a new lock is working before the locksmith has left. No matter what type of locked out service you have had!
